What is Honeybush?
Like its better-known cousin, rooibos, honeybush is a mild, fragrant herbal tea from South Africa but, as the name suggests, has a sweeter flavour. Early admirers were the Khoi and San bushmen, who enjoyed this herbal brew in these mountains for centuries.
Wilderness Honeybush is sourced from our nature reserve, Oudeberg, which adjoins the Baviaanskloof (Valley of Baboons) mega-reserve, UNESCO World Heritage Site. We work with the government and other organisations on conservation initiatives within the reserve, including ones focused on the diminishing Cape leopard population. These elusive animals are being trapped by unfriendly livestock farmers and killed. We are trying to protect them by providing safe corridors for movement and breeding, and conducting research into their populations.
A proportion of sales from this tea will fund conservation efforts in the region.
How to enjoy:
Infusing one heaped teaspoon per cup for around 3-5 minutes will do the job. As it is low in tannins, honeybush cannot taste bitter, no matter how long you steep the tea. Milk or honey can be added but we think it’s delicious enough on its own. It also makes a great iced tea: go wild and enjoy it with ice and mint!
