T he Leopard Trail was badly affected by the recent fires, which did actually reach the SE corner of our Oudeberg property in the end. The homestead that serves as the start of the hiking trail was completely surrounded by fire but was not itself damaged luckily. Visitors have not been allowed onto the Leopard Trail since and, disastrously for this local eco-enterprise, a lot of visitor deposits have been returned.

Here is a photo of Willem, who supports his family as Leopard Trail manager. They have had 12 parties on the trail since it launched last year. Day 3 of the hike includes “Honeybush Hill”; sadly all the honeybush has been destroyed by the fires. Interestingly, the Cape’s drought has had a larger impact on the supply of rooibos (less hardy), with the market price for rooibos now higher than honeybush.
